The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and the Return of the Mad Scientist

Theory by Drifting

I’ve finally got round to catching up with ‘Boruto: Two Blue Vortex’, so I thought I’d share my thoughts and theories. I’ll try to keep it short, although when I used to regularly comment on this subreddit, my comments were often longer than most peoples posts, so I’m not particularly great at keeping things short lmao. 😅

Anyways, on to the thoughts and theories…

Time

The first thing that really piqued my interest was when Boruto was speaking to Code about the Claw Grimes and he said “you need to scrap them while you still hold the reins, or else we’ll end up in the worst possible future for everyone”. This immediately made me think of Boruto’s quote in the time skip scene (Boruto Chapter 1) when he said “I guess this was the only possible outcome”. I’ve been boring people for years with my theories regarding the possibility that time will play a major part in the story, so it’s nice to see this now seems to be the case.

I’ve always leaned towards the possibility of Boruto eventually developing time-travelling abilities, but I’ve also always been open to the possibility of him developing the ability to see the future (or different possible outcomes), which does seem to be the case now. In fact, one of my first theories I ever posted on here in February 2021 (on an old account) was about Boruto eventually developing the ability to see the future, either using the Jougan or by developing Momoshiki’s ability to see peoples fate, and him then seeing an awful future that he wants to prevent, which would then force him to become a “villain” who does some questionable things in his quest to prevent the dark future. I’m very excited that Boruto is now seen as a villain, and that he also seems to be on a quest to prevent “the worst possible future for everyone”.

Maybe I can see the future too. 😮

Death, Trees and More Time

It was cool to see the Jigen/Isshiki Shinju (I think that’s the correct term?) reiterating that the chakra fruits created by divine trees contain the information of all living things on a planet, past and present. This was first mentioned by Amado, and was then mentioned by Isshiki’s soul (or the projection of Isshiki’s “soul” via Amado’s tech lmao) in his conversation with Code. This has been mentioned three times now, so it’s clearly important to the story, which makes sense given Amado’s quest to resurrect his daughter.

The combination of that quote and the characters being consumed by the trees actually made me think of Kagura. For those who don’t know or don’t remember, Kagura died in the anime and was then buried under a tree in his home village. Kagura is actually my favourite anime-only character, but I wasn’t upset when he died, because I’ve always been fairly certain we’ll see him again at some point in the story (not in the manga). I’ve always found it interesting that Boruto has experienced several devastating deaths in the story, which includes Mugino, Ohnoki and finally Kagura. The fact that their data is available in the Ten Tails means that we’ll probably see them again eventually. Although maybe not Ohnoki since he was so old? 🤔

Given the direction that everything is going in, I can’t help but wonder if Boruto can somehow access the “data” of people who have died on the planet? People have always wondered if Boruto will gain his Kenjustu skills from Kagura (as well as Sasuke), and Boruto now clearly has those skills as well as Minato’s Flying Raijin jutsu.

I suppose a more outlandish theory would be that the Boruto we’re currently seeing is a version of Boruto from the near future who failed to prevent the worst possible outcome, and who then cultivated and ate the chakra fruit before going back in time to try to change the outcome. I realise this idea is so outlandish that it’s bordering on stupid, but it would explain how Boruto knows the Flying Raijin Jutsu (from eating the chakra fruit), and it would also explain why he seems to know about the future. Although its much more likely that he learned the jutsu some other way, and that he has some new ability that allows him to see the future/possible outcomes (the Jougan?).

Kashin Koji the Mentor

I really wasn’t surprised when Kashin Koji was revealed to be working with Boruto, because I’ve been saying this will happen for years. To be fair, many people have theorised they would work together eventually, but I don’t think I’ve seen anybody back up that theory with as many points as me. Just to recap, those points include:

  • Koji has previously showed a special interest in Boruto
  • Kishimoto loves his parallels, so it’s likely he’d want to have Boruto spend the time skip with Koji to parallel Naruto spending the time skip with Jiraiya
  • Koji’s conversation with Isshiki about his fate being the same as Jiraiya’s introduced genetic determinism as a theme surrounding his character. Koji mentoring (or just working with) Boruto seemed inevitable after that.
  • Kagemasa was clearly a hint towards Boruto’s future in the story, but it’s also interesting that his appearance strongly matches Koji’s appearance, with his red outfit, white hair and his mask that has a very similar shape to the mask Koji used to wear.

Whilst it seemed inevitable and obvious that they would work together, I’m glad to see it’s finally happened. I suppose the interesting question is whether Koji knows he’s working with Boruto or if he thinks he’s working with Kawaki?

Ninja X-Cards

The fact that Boruto knows the Flying Raijin Jutsu reminded me of a weird old theory I used to have regarding the X Cards. The theory was that the various transactions of X cards in the series might be purposeful hints towards future aspects of the story. I’m not sure where I currently stand with this idea, but some things to consider include:

  • There was a running gag of Boruto constantly getting a Naruto card and being annoyed about it, and now Naruto has been taken away from him
  • Tento gave Boruto a Sasuke card, but Boruto gave it back to him. Boruto has now lost Sasuke
  • Boruto traded a Naruto card for Kawaki’s Minato card. Kawaki now has Naruto, and Boruto somehow knows the Flying Raijin
  • Sarada obtained an Orochimaru card when she opened a pack in Boruto Chapter 15. We already have the Naruto and Jaraiya parallel with Boruto and Koji, so perhaps Sarada has somehow been in contact with Orochimaru during the time skip, so we’ll get the Sasuke and Orochimaru parallel? 🤔

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence

I’m really annoyed at myself for this one, because I’ve had a theory for quite a while that the story would eventually introduce a villain that is analogous/similar to artificial intelligence, and now we seem to have that exact thing with these sentient Shinju. Unfortunately, I’ve always had a bad habit of sharing most of my ideas in comments on other peoples posts, so I never got round to creating a post about it. 😭

The main crux of my theory was regarding all of the different computer-related names in the series, such as Code, Bug, Daemon, Ada/Eida etc, and the fact that the series has always teased technology as a potential threat. Some things to consider regarding this theory include:

  • Amado was the one who gave Code his abilities, and now Code’s use of those abilities has caused the Claw Grime to become sentient.
  • Amado despises the Otsutuki’s, and now we’ve seen the creation of a powerful threat that wants to devour them
  • Code’s name might be a purposeful hint towards him being used to make the Claw Grime sentient, since AI is obviously created using code. Perhaps Amado altered him in some way to bring about this outcome?
  • Code being used by Amado for this purpose would explain why the female Shinju said “Poor Code. It seems to be your inescapable fate to be a clown who ends up being used by someone else. It’s almost laughable”.
  • Amado used to work with Kara whose main aim was cultivate the chakra fruit from the divine tree, and now we have these Shinju who want to achieve just that

Based on all this, I would say I’m fairly certain that bastard Amado is behind this lmao. That guy is suspiciously quiet right now, but I’m sure we’ll see him in the upcoming chapters. If we really are getting AI in the story, then I guess we’ll also need the mad scientist who created it.

Final Words

I hope everything I said made sense. If anything I said is blatantly wrong, please let me know and feel free to call me an idiot lmao. I haven’t really had much time to think about Boruto for the past 6 months, because I’ve been focusing on learning about Artificial Intelligence (ironically), so my understanding of the story isn’t as good as it used to be, and I might have forgot key details or just got certain details completely wrong. 😅 Either way, I hope you’ll find some of these ideas interesting, even if some of them are a bit outlandish or possibly completely wrong.
